Massachusetts has three casinos and will have three for the foreseeable future. The Expanded Gaming Act of 2011 created two resort casino licences and one slots parlor licence, and all three were awarded and built by 2019. This page lists every licensed floor, what each is allowed to offer, and the rules that apply to all of them.
The three licences
| Casino | Licence | City | Opened | Operator | Google rating |
| Encore Boston Harbor | Resort casino | Everett | June 23, 2019 | Wynn Resorts | 4.3, 20,000+ reviews |
| MGM Springfield | Resort casino | Springfield | 2018 | MGM Resorts | 4.0, 13,000+ reviews |
| Plainridge Park Casino | Slots parlor | Plainville | 2015 | Penn Entertainment | 3.7, 5,600+ reviews |
The licence type decides the floor. A resort casino may run slot machines, live table games and poker. The slots parlor may run machines only, which is why Plainridge Park has electronic table games played against a screen and no live dealers.
Encore Boston Harbor
The $2.6 billion Wynn resort on the Mystic River in Everett, three miles from downtown Boston, is the largest floor in the state and the only resort casino in New England's biggest metro. More than 2,700 slot machines from quarter denominations to $125 a spin, more than 170 live tables, a 24-table poker room open 24 hours, a retail sportsbook and free self-parking. It rates 4.3 from more than 20,000 Google reviewers. Our Encore Boston Harbor guide covers the resort in depth.
MGM Springfield
The largest slot floor in Massachusetts, around 2,550 machines, with about 120 live tables, a poker room that runs between 13 and 23 tables depending on the night, and a retail sportsbook, woven into several blocks of downtown Springfield rather than housed in one building. Open 24 hours. It rates 4.0 from more than 13,000 reviewers, and it is the only casino in western Massachusetts. Read our MGM Springfield review.
Plainridge Park Casino
About 1,250 machines in Plainville, near the Rhode Island line: roughly 900 slots, a large video poker bank and about 60 electronic table games. No live tables and no poker room, by licence. It is also New England's home of live harness racing, with a season from April through November and simulcast wagering all year, and a retail sportsbook has operated since January 2023. Open 24 hours, free parking, off I-495. It rates 3.7 from more than 5,600 reviewers.
The rules that apply to all three
Age. You must be 21 to enter any Massachusetts casino floor. The state lottery is 18. This is stricter than most states, where 18 is common for casino entry.
Hours. All three floors run 24 hours a day, every day. Poker rooms and restaurants keep their own hours.
What is not on offer. Real-money online casinos are not authorised in Massachusetts. HB 4431, which would have legalised them and banned sweepstakes casinos at the same time, died in committee in March 2026; its sponsor has said he intends to refile for the 2027 to 2028 session. Sports betting is legal online and at the three retail books. Daily fantasy sports are legal and regulated, with a minimum age of 21.
Sweepstakes casinos. These operate on a no-purchase-necessary promotional model and are neither expressly licensed nor prohibited in Massachusetts. Our guide to Massachusetts sweepstakes rules sets out where they stand, and our best sweepstakes casinos in Massachusetts guide ranks them from reviewer tests.
Choosing between them
We rate Encore the best choice for table games, poker and a resort night, and it is better than MGM Springfield on table count and poker hours. MGM Springfield wins on slot count and on having a real downtown around it. Plainridge Park is the quick, free-parking slots visit, and the only place in the state to watch live racing. For a Boston-centred comparison by drive time, see casinos near Boston. All three appear on our in-person casinos page.
